Chinese President Xi Jinping will attend the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi from Sept. 12 to 13 at the invitation of Prime Minister of the Republic of India Narendra Modi.
Over the years, the BRICS cooperation mechanism has grown into one of the most important platforms for solidarity and cooperation among emerging markets and developing countries.
As a staunch supporter and active participant in the mechanism, China is expected by the international community to offer proposals that advance high-quality development through greater BRICS cooperation.

This year’s summit coincides with the 20th anniversary of BRICS cooperation. Over the past two decades, the BRICS cooperation mechanism has evolved from a dialogue platform among emerging markets into an important multilateral mechanism spanning four continents and covering political and security affairs, economic and financial cooperation, and people-to-people exchanges.
The BRICS family has continued to grow, its areas of cooperation have expanded steadily, and it has increasingly become a key force for peace, development, and justice worldwide.
Throughout this journey, China has consistently contributed wisdom and strength to BRICS cooperation.
Xi proposed the “BRICS Spirit” of openness, inclusiveness, and win-win cooperation in 2014, and the “BRICS Plus” cooperation model during the 2017 BRICS Summit in Xiamen. He has also promoted the BRICS’ historic expansion. In 2024, Xi proposed the vision of building a BRICS committed to peace, innovation, green development, justice, and closer people-to-people exchanges.
These major ideas and initiatives proposed by Xi have charted the course for the development of BRICS. Under his leadership, BRICS has increasingly become a major channel for strengthening solidarity and cooperation among Global South countries and a pioneering force in reforming global governance.
Economic globalization is an irreversible trend. Today, the BRICS family accounts for more than half of the world’s population, nearly 30 percent of global economic output and 1/5 of global trade. It brings together vast resources, a major manufacturing hub, and a huge market.
In the face of the headwinds of protectionism, BRICS countries have remained a backbone of solidarity and cooperation. They uphold the multilateral trading system with the World Trade Organization at its core, advocate economic globalization that is universally beneficial and inclusive, and work to ensure that Global South countries can participate fairly in international cooperation and share in the benefits of development.
BRICS countries are also at the forefront of high-quality development, fostering new quality productive forces. They are expanding cooperation in green industries, clean energy and green minerals, while promoting the green transformation of entire industrial chains.
As a Chinese saying goes, it takes a good blacksmith to forge good steel. The closer BRICS cooperation becomes, the greater the confidence, the broader the options, and more effective the response to external risks and challenges. Strengthening and expanding greater BRICS cooperation will enable BRICS to better represent and safeguard the common interests of developing countries.
China is committed to deepening practical cooperation with other BRICS countries. It has taken a series of practical measures to advance the greater BRICS cooperation.
These include promoting high-quality Belt and Road cooperation, supporting the development of the New Development Bank, establishing a China-BRICS Artificial Intelligence Development and Cooperation Center and the China-BRICS New Quality Productive Forces Research Center.
It has also worked to advance a BRICS Partnership on New Industrial Revolution innovation center, prevent and mitigate AI risks, and improve governance in emerging fields.
The vitality of BRICS lies in equality and mutual benefit; its strength lies in unity and mutual assistance. Standing at a new historical starting point, China stands ready to work with all BRICS countries to strengthen the BRICS partnership, demonstrate its strength and vitality, and open a new chapter of high-quality development in greater BRICS cooperation. Together with more Global South countries, China will work to build a community with a shared future for humanity.
