UNSW Selects D2L for Institution-Wide Learning Transformation Reaching Over 80,000 Learners

Australia’s top university is set to roll out D2L Brightspace as the foundation of its new digital learning environment

MELBOURNE, Australia, Sept. 9, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — D2L, a global leader in learning innovation, shares that UNSW Sydney has selected D2L Brightspace as its new learning platform. This partnership will support an ambitious, institution-wide transformation of the teaching and learning experience for over 80,000 learners and thousands of educators.

One of the world’s leading research-intensive universities, and a member of Australia’s prestigious Group of Eight universities, UNSW ranks #1 in Australia and #19 globally in the 2027 QS World University Rankings. Guided by its mission to advance Progress for All globally through transformative education, innovative research and meaningful engagement, UNSW is investing in a human-centred digital learning ecosystem that embodies its Values in Action: demonstrating excellence, driving innovation, building collaboration, embracing diversity and displaying respect.

Together, UNSW and D2L can deliver more consistent, personalised, accessible and engaging learning experiences, while helping reduce complexity for educators and advancing innovative approaches to content and assessment design. The multi-year rollout of D2L Brightspace across the institution is designed to help create a more seamless, integrated and adaptable digital learning environment that can support both on-campus and flexible learning pathways.

“Higher education is changing rapidly. We can see the impact of changing student expectations, new models of education and emerging technologies here in Australia, while globally we are seeing even greater change on the horizon,” said Professor Vlado Perkovic, Provost and Acting Vice-Chancellor at UNSW Sydney. “For UNSW, this meant we needed to take a long-term view of the learning environment we want to create for our future students and educators. We have chosen a partner in D2L whose focus is teaching and learning, and who can work with us to build a modern, flexible platform that can evolve with our community.”

Professor Sarah Maddison, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Education and Student Experience, said the new platform would help ensure UNSW’s learning environment keeps pace with the needs of students and educators.

“Our students are entering an increasingly complex world, shaped by rapid technological, professional and social change. Their learning environment needs to be ready for what comes next,” said Professor Maddison. “We are not simply implementing an off-the-shelf platform. We are designing our future learning environment together with our students and staff. D2L Brightspace gives us the opportunity to create a more consistent, accessible and intuitive digital learning experience for our students, while giving our educators the flexibility and creativity to design and deliver outstanding teaching, now and into the future.”

UNSW plans to leverage a suite of D2L solutions to realise its education technology ambitions and Educational Technology Roadmap:

  • D2L Brightspace: An award-winning learning platform designed to help educators create more interactive, personalised learning experiences and improve learning outcomes.
  • D2L Creator+: A dynamic content creation tool that can integrate 50+ interactive H5P content types to support highly engaging, accessible learning experiences aligned with universal design principles.
  • D2L Lumi: UNSW plans to use Lumi Chat, Lumi Tutor and Lumi Feedback to support enhanced learning experiences for learners and educators – embracing responsible AI design to uphold ethical standards, privacy and academic integrity.
  • D2L Performance+: A robust analytics dashboard that can deliver actionable insights into learner engagement, success and retention, empowering educators to make data-informed decisions that improve outcomes for students.

UNSW selected D2L for its strong alignment with the University’s broader learning transformation strategy and commitment to human-centred design, genuine co-design with the UNSW community, accessibility, scalability, interoperability and responsible innovation. D2L’s approach to design and continuous product development further supports UNSW’s focus on inclusive, future-ready education that values diverse learners and helps to equip them to thrive.

“UNSW has an ambitious vision for Progress for All through transformative education,” said John Baker, President and CEO of D2L. “We are proud to work with UNSW on a transformation of this scale. Together we can empower learners to achieve more than they dreamed possible, help equip educators with innovative tools and insights, and thoughtfully explore the role responsible AI can play in shaping the future of education. We look forward to co-designing solutions closely with the UNSW community that reflect its values of excellence, innovation, collaboration, diversity and respect.”
